    Only pure protein causes GH peak

    Ingesting a portion of amino acids is not the only way to stimulate the pituitary to pump an extra load of growth hormone into your bloodstream. Ordinary protein, in which the same amino acids are still joined up, does exactly the same, according to a Dutch study published in 2008. But it only works if you consume that protein without carbohydrates or fats. Three cheers for the inventor of the protein shake.



    We’ve already written about the Dutch research on the effect of proteins on growth hormone production. The article was about gelatine, an incomplete protein that turns out to be an excellent GH booster. In the study here, the researchers examined a more complete protein: soya protein. Six women aged between 19 and 36 were given first thing in the morning a placebo, a soya protein shake or a regular breakfast consisting of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The composition of the test meals is shown here below.






    After the subjects had consumed their ‘breakfast’, the researchers measured the concentration of growth hormone in their blood. In the subjects that had taken the placebo [black diamonds] and those that had eaten a meal [black squares] their GH level remained unchanged. In the subjects who had had a protein shake their GH level rose after an hour and a half.






    The figure below shows the total amount of growth hormone that the subjects made in the first five hours after consuming the shake or the meal.






    So carbohydrates and fats inhibit the production of growth hormone, suggest the researchers. Life extensionists or athletes who want to raise their growth hormone levels could do so with protein shakes, or by eating meals that consist almost entirely of proteins. Foods like low-fat quark (curd cheese) or tempeh probably wouldn’t work: low-fat quark consists of one-third carbohydrate and tempeh contains fat as well as protein. But protein shakes, egg proteins, fish or chicken fillet should work.

    Oh yes. Gelatine pudding raises GH levels only if it doesn’t contain sugar.

    o estudo foi feito em 6 mulheres, ingerindo 42g de proteina de soja no desjejum..
    mas no final, o proprio texto diz que qq tipo de proteina, desde q ingerida sem carbo ou fat, também funciona!
