LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX DIETS: NO advantage for weight/fat loss

Advocates of low-carb diets recommend taht people eat low glycemic index foods to prevent hunger and promote weight loss. Glycemic Index is a measure of the rate that a food increases blood sugar. High glycemic index foods are broken down easily and increase blood sugar rapidly. This triggers an insulin response, which causes a crash in blood sugar(which makes you hungry sooner) and promotes fat storage. Advocates of low-carb diets often promote this concept, but there is little evidence to support it. DAnish researchers found that the glycemic index of meals had no effects on hunger or weight loss during a 10week study. Subjects on low glycemic index diets showed decreased LDL(bad colesterol), but there was no difference in insulin metabolism, resting blood sugar, triglyceric(blood fat), or HDL(bom colesterol), between people on high and low glycemic index diets. Eating a low glycemic index diet may help reduce LDL, but it ofters no advantage for regulating blood sugar or promoting weight/fat loss( Am J Clin Nutr, 80: 337-347, 2004)

It has becomethe mantra of proponents of the low carbohydrate Atkins-type diets who say low glycemic index foods help people lose weight, improve insulin sensititvy, depress hunger and reduce the risk of heart disease. Danish researchrs found no difference in weight loss between people eating diets emphasizing high or low glycemic index foods. Subjects consuming low glycemic index foods did show reductions in LDL(MAL), cholesterol. the study did not support the theory that low glycemic index foods promote weight loss or supress appetite.
